Companies Putting an Honest Culture into Practice

In our previous post we talked about the importance of an honest corporate culture, and how to develop one in your workplace.

While looking at different ways to create this type of culture, it’s also beneficial to look at how some of today’s top companies are putting into the practice the concept of honest corporate cultures.

We will be taking a look at three companies in particular that have high ratings when it comes to promoting honesty in the workplace.

Progressive Insurance

Most of us have seen Progressive’s quirky commercials centered around the “Flo” character, but you may not be as aware of what it’s like to actually work for this company. Glassdoor ranked it amongst the Top 25 companies to work in the country, particularly as it pertains to the corporate culture.

Real employees of Progressive describe it as a great place to work because of aspects like the flexible work arrangements and the constant sense of improvement, but also because of the transparency of the company.

The company has a clearly defined and often reinforced set of Core Values that place honesty at the top of the list as well. Their mission statement reads as follows:

“Progressive’s Core Values serve as the foundation for our corporate culture. They govern our decisions and define the manner in which we conduct our business and how we interact with all interested parties.”

Number one on the list is Integrity:

“Integrity—We revere honesty. We adhere to high ethical standards, provide timely, accurate and complete financial reporting, encourage disclosing bad news and welcome disagreement.”

Oglivy and Mather

Oglivy and Mather is an advertising, marketing and public relations company based in Manhattan, with more than 450 offices located across the globe and nearly 20,000 worldwide employees.

This company has a unique approach to its corporate culture in so many ways. Their mission state reads as follows:

“Superior service to our clients depends on making the most of our people. Give them challenging opportunities, recognition for achievement, job enrichment and the maximum responsibility. Treat them as grown-ups and they will grow up. Help them in difficulty. Be affectionate and human.”

Under the umbrella of this mission statement falls the issue of honesty, with the company saying the following:

“We like people who are honest. Honest in argument, honest with clients, honest with suppliers, honest with the company—and above all, honest with consumers.”

Zappos

We’ve talked in the past about how Zappos is a standout employer in so many ways, and the company certainly don’t fall short when it comes to creating a culture of honesty.

The company has 10 core values, and number six is listed as “Build Open and Honest Relationships with Communication.”

The company says the following:

“Fundamentally, we believe that openness and honesty make for the best relationships because that leads to trust and faith. We value strong relationships in all areas: with managers, direct reports, customers (internal and external), vendors, business partners, team members and co-workers.”

Zappos builds on this premise by creating a link between honesty and strong relationships in the workplace, stating that while it’s difficult to build a sense of trust in a relationship, if it exists, so much more can be accomplished as a result.

As with the previous two companies, Zappos also highlights the importance of sharing diverse thoughts and opinions as part of being a valuable employee. There’s also a strong focus on communication in the workplace, as a building block of an honest culture.
